A young acolyte bows as you approach. "Greetings, Summoner. I confess your face is yet unfamiliar to me. May I ask your name?"
He opens the register book and wets a quill. Will you sign?

The Matter of Dar'Khos

I had written up this little fluff piece in the optional "Why" section of my form only to realize after it could only be 300 characters. So instead of deleting everything I'm just posting it here to link to. Enjoy!

This truly is a New Day for Shurima. Not since the great Rune Wars has our people held so much sway across the lands of Valoran, but we must ensure we take the proper steps to keep such power. We must adapt to this world and shift as the demands on us mount, for one false step could cost us everything.

The people of Dar'Khos need to be shown that our Emperor is a benevolent ruler, a kind rule, but more than anything a fair ruler. We need to show that with Azir as their leader they can go about their lives must as they had, as strong Shurimans who can do as they please with their profits and ventures. The Sar'Kah want to rule Dar'Khos? So be it! They can govern as they always have, so long as they recognize Emporer Azir as the one True Leader of Shurima! Answerable only to Him, we can show the people of Valoran that Shurima is ready to enter this new age, that we can be reasonable with what is asked of us, but also strong in our unity against outside oppressors!

In time I am confident Dar'Khos will come to see the widsom of Azir and the strength that is offered by a unified Shurima, as I know Azir has the wisdom to allow the people of Dar'Khos the lives they want under his rule.

FOR SHURIMA!

Thanks for posting! This might be good Herald material, e.g., for a "letter to the editors".

I have a little time before I need to run, so I figured I'd toss in a hypothetical counterargument.

---

The Summoner's endorsement of a lighter-handed approach to Dar'Khos is met with general applause from the audience hall. But not from Vazar, a respected merchant from northern Shurima, where the prevalence of raiders and bandits very often make his profession a bloody business. (You try moving Kalamandan gemstones through the Mogron Pass sometime.) He rises from his seat among those who have called this meeting.

"And what if the Emperor Azir," he pauses to raise a hand and nod toward some of Azir's more vehement supporters, adding, "long may he reign," before turning back to Adonidus, "what if he asks for soldiers to meet Noxus in battle, or levies of gold to pay his debts, or laborers to rebuild his cities?"

He lets that question hang in the air as he looks around. "What if we demand what we need from Dar'Khos, the richest city in Shurima by far, and they say no? Do we send Nasus to a town hall meeting to start a ballot initiative, or whatever it is they do in Dar'Khos? The Council says Dar'Khos is ours: what a glorious day it is. But is your Council going to force Dar'Khos to give us a single pebble? What good does it do us to say we're unified, when they tell us 'no' and we've got nothing to say? There's a war on, Summoner. We need to retake Shurima before they do. We have to win now, not after Dar'Khos warms up to us. Or else we're going to end up as little tiny islands in an ocean of enemies. Your League says we're all safe for now, until September, because of some edict or another, but I for one plan to live past September. So what happens in October? With all due respect, Noxus and Piltover have their share of Summoners, as well. They've come up with excuses to invade 'sovereign nations of the League' before, and I didn't see the League do much of anything when Noxus nearly took over Shon-Xan. And even if they leave us be, I don't see what good Shuriman independence does me if I have to travel through Noxian land to make a living. I'll be wishing the bandits were back."

He looks over the crowd. "We need troops now. We need workers now. We need gold now. And speeches about how we're all in this together aren't going to get that out of Dar'Khos anytime soon."

Isn't the softer approach the plan for the long term? I mean, yes, we need soldiers and production and everything but alienating the people of "the richest city in Shurima by far" be a mistake? Money is power and we wouldn't want them to be against us.

Heh, I actually forgot about this! But here goes:

Adonidus turned to the man who spoke. Any with an eye could tell that he had his best wears on for this meeting, and though well off he wouldn't compare to the wealth of some in southern Dar'Khos. At a glance Adonidus could see this was a man who fought for every gold coin that made it to his purse, he could use that.

"I may be a Summoner sir, but don't presume that I don't know the struggles of Shurima," as he spoke Adonidus removed the cowl revealing a face that was half scarred and disfigured. "I was there when the Beast attacked the floating pyramid, I know what dangers face Shurima."
He turned his gaze to the audience before continuing. "Look at this man before you, he is afraid but he has reason to be so! We are indeed surrounded by many enemies in this new age. But by the will of Azir and the other Champions among you who have stepped forward we have proven that we can more than meet these threats, we can crush them! But we can only do this as a Shurima united!"

The initial shock of his disfigurement took hold of their curiosity, but now he felt he held their attention. "You there," pointing to a poorer man. "What happens to sand when you take hold of it in an ever tightening grasp." The man looked unsure, clearly he didn't expect to be called upon. "Come now, I'm sure you know the answer."
"It-it slips through?"
"It slips through. Exactly."

He rounded to the Dar'Khos host, his dead eye gleaming in the filtered sunlight. "The Dar'Khos are like sand, they are like us. Indeed they ARE us! You squeeze too hard and you will loose so much more than you can ever hold. But you cup your palms," he said as he grew up some sand beneath him. "And you find the strength therein."

He strode to the centre of the chamber, all eyes now on him. "My friend the merchant is afraid of his and his own, but the Dar'Khos are his own! He envisions scattered oasis' in the sand but we ARE the sand! What will happen when our enemies try to come between us? We strike! Hard and fast, from every direction. We cut their supply lines, we fill their ranks with mis-information. We swarm over them like a Scarab Storm under the sun on high! I have no doubt that if the time comes, the Dar'Khos will lend all they aid they can offer. For they know that through Azir, all what they hope to accomplish will hold true. That through a Shurima united, we will banish our enemies from our lands once and for all!"

I'd say that we should let it continue to be self governed as a vassal state of the empire. It looks better on our resume and more money has never hurt anyone.
