I've noticed a few people have have managed to create alter-egos in the Factions lore. I was wondering how it happened.

Rin's right, you really need to "spend time" with your character, so to speak, to truly see if their Mary-Sue. A background is only a background, if you do something interesting with it, it doesn't matter if it seems "too generic" or "too Mary-Sue". If your summoner is super good at a particular subject of magic, but because of that the audience is able to explore and learn a lot about that magic, it's not a total "Mary-Sue", imo. Same with the character; if he's op, but kinda weird and socially awkward, that makes for an interesting dichotomy, and thus something fun to read.

I feel meaningful flaws are important (and by meaningful, I mean "actually hamper or get in the way of the character's goals/wants/needs") to keep a character grounded. Making someone extremely good at something is easier to digest if they're also a complete disaster in other areas (and that affects their goals, of course).

On the other hand, it's hard to be a casual person in the Factions universe. For example, the Adventure to the Barrier Mountains RP that I tried to get my character into just doesn't make sense for my character to get into. For context, to those of you who haven't been following that thread, my character's a pretty casual guy, got called out to look at some artifact, the rest of the guys in the RP and me chilled out in spider town with magic enchanted spider, it died, and they're ready to continue on their quest-- but there's no reason for my character to stick around. Just between Crzy's constant threats, Affa and Mike having their necromancy parties in the corner, and Porcupine being the only reasonable person in the party, my character has no reason to not just return to the Institute after his brief quest, which is a little frustrating considering that it was a lot of fun.

Oh well, at least I was around for a couple pages. Maybe I'll get to hop in another time.

Yeah, one of the reasons I don't RP is that I don't do "outlandish" that well. I like to explore the nuances in a narrowed scope, rather than trying to come up with greater and greater flights of fancy.

If there's ever a more serious murder mystery or something that most people would consider "boring" (perhaps something rules-based, like Pathfinder or ordinary D&D), I might sign up. Until then, I'll just look at the RP forum and sigh wistfully.

Yeah, I found it hard getting my summoner into the pirate one. Thats why I split my quest off and planed on coming back when my summoner had a reason. It is sort of in the middle of the quest so its hard fitting other side quests into this one side quest.

If only affa's character was as good as mine, since mine works well in any situation.

Pisssh, all your character is good for is yelling generic one liners and braking stuff. Anything that generic can fit anywhere. He is like a black sock, yes he gose with anything but really he is just a sock.

If you truly think that, then you do not understand my character.

If you truly think that, then you do not understand my character.

I believe what Affa is saying is that the true ice in Nathan turns him into a person whose personality (at first glance) can be summed up by one word: bloodthirsty. His intelligence just doesn't come through as much because it's overshadowed by his MAIM KILL EAT THEIR SOULS.

And, to be entirely honest...I mostly agree with what she's saying. I feel like a character shouldn't necessarily be able to fit into any situation, because, well, most people aren't like that. Sure, there are people who can do that (Korlf's summoner is a particularly extreme example), but most shouldn't.

IMO.

Shrug. My character is usually more bloodthirsty because I enjoy being bloodthirsty, and I'm in Noxus right now. Noxus is pretty bloodthirsty. I become more bloodthirsty the more I hang around with Noxians. We already have a lot of intelligent scholar summoners right now; Mine wouldn't exactly stand out. Even though my summoner is rather young compared to everyone else, I don't really want to go for the apprentice/newbie. thing. So for now, I will act like a Noxian. Once the arc ends, my character will evolve more during intermission since he now longer has a main opponent to fight against. At this moment, thought, I want you guys to think of one thing when you think of my summoner: Passion. My character is very passionate about what he is doing; whether it is helping Noxus or the Freljord, making money, being creepy, etc. He always puts his whole heart and soul into what he is doing.

Ok

Although, if you really want that to be a defining trait, maybe emphasize it more in his Bio? It didn't really come through for me, but I think a couple edits to the Personality section could do wonders.

I would suggest you add a little detail on what is going through your summoners head. Notice, I always write what Affa is thinking. I don't necessarily do this so your summoner can react to it... He cant... that would be meta gaming (stop it), unless he is a mind reader or I say she is showing an emotion. This is a good way to develop your character and adapt them to the environment and adds to the story.

Also write about what is going on around him. Describe the world through his perspective. This will also add to his character.
