I've noticed a few people have have managed to create alter-egos in the Factions lore. I was wondering how it happened. |

Would being mundane where everything else is strange not be considered strange in itself? |

Some mundane-ness is not a bad thing. If everything and everyone is special, like Rex sorta alluded to, it's less special. It makes the world feel more real if we have some more average summoner. That's not to say you have to be a bland average character, everyone should have something sort of unique. But not everyone has to be grimdark, orphans that work for Karthus or whatever. We can have an average Demacian or an average Freljordian, etc. It's a fine balance between "something interesting about this character" and "this character is normal enough to fit in this world". |

I tried to aim for "average Frostguard", myself. I like not being anything special. |

From a writing perspective, not that I have much ethos there, my biggest accomplishments are a couple articles and being Lore Staff here in that field, this is a perfect allusion to why I, personally, do not like OC's in Fanfiction about 90% of the time. You get the issue of what Cupcake referred to when I talked to him about this as "special sauce", where, if we're using the food allegory, it's like a sandwich. You have the basic ingredients, appearance, personality, a little background, and then you want to add something to spice it up. To use a league character as an example, Garen. Garen's basics are that he's a big tough guy with a military background, he's brave and he wants to fight against injustice. That's a good base for a character, but it's nothing too interesting. The fun stuff about Garen is really a couple things, one is that he loves spinning and bushes, he has an awkward relationship with his sister because he might be the direct cause of a lot of her traumatic childhood, and he's realizing after stuff like Kalamanda that, due to Katarina and Talon, maybe not all the Noxians are bad, and it's worth cooperating with them for the greater good. All that is believable. All that makes him more interesting without sacrificing him fitting into the setting. I'm now going to horribly strawman a typical bad Fanfiction OC. Let's call him Greg. Greg is a Noxian foot soldier who was orphaned after his parents both died in Ionia, so now he's out for REVENGE/VENGEANCE/KALISTA. Okay. That's not too bad. But what happens when you absolutely pour on that special sauce. Greg is also the world's best katana swordsman, and his mother was secretly a dragon and his father a vampire, so he's a draco-vampire who drinks blood, and nobody knows but he also secretly holds the Demondeathdarkmurder Blade, which lets him eat the souls of people up to 10 kilometers away, and he has a cool catch phrase like "...Death...is coming....", and he rides a motorcycle made of bones, and he had sex with all the female champions yeah even Rek'sai. And that doesn't fit into the setting at all. If I wanted to drop Garen into a standard Runeterran scene, like maybe he's fighting some bandits outside Demacia with Galio, I could. Greg does not fit anywhere in Runeterra unless I shoehorn him like crazy. The key to it, like Abi said, is making the character feel like a natural part of the world. Not that the world revolves around them, or that they could totally destroy the world with the Diredoomdeathstabblood Blade's secret technique. If I were making a Summoner, I'd try to stay away from: -Races that don't exist on Runeterra (Elves, Vampires (vlad is a hemomancer)) -Characters that are solely responsible for some mysterious background event. (Don't say your summoner is the one who killed General DuCouteau, that locks out any other possibilities for that if Riot makes something canon there, and that's sort of a core mystery element to the stories of a few champs) -Romantic Relationships with Champions (This just makes you sound a little creepy, TBH, if your Summoner is too self-inserty.) Of course, nothing I say is absolute, I'm just some random internet man spitballing. I won't pretend to be the authority on any of this, because in creative stuff, there is none, which is why it's so great. Edited by LordHippoman, Aug 10 2015, 12:54 PM.

I don't know, I think that it's possible to do romantic relationships with champions right if they're not actually portrayed as a good thing. Narrowly surviving a romantic encounter with Ahri, for example, can be reasonably interesting (provided the character is legitimately spooked/scarred by the event and not "fuck yeah I scored with a foxy lady!"). Other examples include being seduced and robbed/conned by TF, or being one of the canonical lovers that MF has had and used to advance her plans. Basically so long as it's clear that the champion was in control the entire time and didn't really feel much (or anything at all) towards the Summoner, can be an interesting bit of spice on an otherwise bland character. |
