Undead Cyborg Merman wearing Crab Armor
Almost there.

Almost there...

Almost-

The tiny device shrieked as if in agony and exploded in a shower of sparks, effectively erasing several months worth of preparation. The sound blasted throughout Red's workshop, shattering glass and sending papers flying.

Red froze in place.

No.

My calculations were perfect.

No.

NO.

The rage of an undead abomination is a terrifying thing to behold. Scarier still is the rage of a crazed scientist denied.

"NOOOOO!"

Lakor the undead poro dove for cover and Naxe the Battlecast poro retracted into his defensive shell as Red screeched, a noise that would drive fear into the heart of even the bravest of warriors.

So much had gone wrong. His first week in Icathia had seemed successful. The research he was able to perform was supposed to be the final piece of this equation.

But then-

"Summoner."

Oh. Great. Another distraction.

Red ceased his screeching and slowly angled his head downward and to the right, training his robotic eye on his uninvited guest.

To his complete shock, League Champion Nami floated through the entryway to the workshop. His addled mind raced.

But not quickly enough.

"Explain something to me, Summoner RednaxelaKor," Nami said coolly. "Your alignment with Icathia on this Nexus business is bad enough, but you actively participated in a League match in an attempt to convict one of our own people who claims to have fought with Kazuri the Conqueror himself. Why?"

He didn't need this right now. Champion or not, this wasn't going to be pretty.

Red attempted to retort venomously, but his screeching had damaged his speaker even further. Instead of a scathing comment about which people were and weren't his, sparks spat from Red's face, catching both Summoner and Champion off-guard.

Nami stared intently. Red let her. Nothing to hide. He was a mess.

He was in even worse shape than when he had declared his alignment with Icathia. His robes had become mere rags, and his mechanical parts sagged unnaturally, looking as if they would fall off at any moment. Thankfully, his arm and eye were still functioning properly, but he knew that would change soon. He glared back at Nami with all the ire he could muster.

Nami stared for a moment longer. Naxe switched modes, observing her closely. Red braced for a lecture.

Everything changed when a weak cry emanated from the box that Lakor had taken cover in.

Red scrambled for the box and was horrified to discover that Lakor had plowed into a pile of broken glass inside of the box. The poro was on his side, mewing pitifully as his ghostly green and black essence leaked out. If Lakor lost too much, his soul would be unable to stay in the husk it was inhabiting.

He tried to say something to the little guy, but his speaker was well and truly broken. The silence was filled with his desperate attempts to save and reassure the poro.

It didn't take long to realize that there was nothing he could do. Lakor looked up at him with his rapidly fading green eyes, pleading. Red didn't realize that he was crying until a tear trickled down onto Lakor's black fur.

Red touched his face. He didn't realize that he was even capable of crying. Not that he particularly cared at this moment.

He cradled Lakor and turned away from the desk. Naxe hopped onto his shoulder and stared intently at his adoptive brother.

Probably scanning for a solution, Red guessed numbly.

Nami cleared her throat. Red had forgotten that she was even here. She gestured to the lump of fluff in Red's arms. Red stared back at her, not understanding.

Nami sighed and then drew back as if she were about to toss him something underhanded. Red didn't recognize Ebb and Flow until the spell had left her hand and ricocheted off of the undead poro in his arms and into him. He felt the organic parts of himself come together and repair, which in turn made him feel invigorated. Lakor, having been hit first with the spell, seemed to experience the same thing, but more so.

Red became elated as the poro righted himself in his hands and gave him his signature goofy grin, complete with drool all over his hands. Red hugged Lakor to himself, careful not to crush him. Naxe, still perched on Red's shoulder, joined in the celebration, firing one burst of confetti Red wasn't even aware that he had.

"There's hope for you yet, Doctor Xelak."

Red paused in his festivity and eyed Nami, who was watching him sadly. After a moment more of silence, she turned to leave. Thinking quickly, Red turned to Naxe and electronically sent him a series of commands. Naxe complied and deployed a tiny speaker from his little body.

"Thank you."

The tiny computer voice didn't have the complexity of Red's normal voice, but it worked as intended. Nami inclined her head at him.

"You are quite welcome. Please, however, do not mistake this for forgiveness. The Marai want you to be held accountable. What I have seen here today has caused me to rethink how to do this. Expect to hear from us soon."

And with that, she floated gracefully out of the devastated workshop.

That was very touching. Good portrayal on Nami. She's generally portrayed as a bubbly, charismatic but naive girl, so it's nice to see the more serious side of her. Poor Red. There is a lot of pathos in this one.

I'm glad you liked it! Yeah, the tale of Red has become a bit of a tragedy. I'm hoping to make some strides with his character this arc. And yes. I hurt a poro. I am a terrible person.
