Advocate of Zaunite sewer rats!

(I wasn't sure where to share it, so I decided to put it here in the form of a short story.) ----------------------------------- After a long time spent wandering around the Institute of War and memorizing the various locations inside, Cyrus decided to spend his afternoon wandering the streets of Zaun with Russell. "You know, Cyrus, you're a summoner now. You can actually go to places besides Zaun! Like Demacia or Ionia! Or the Freljord, or even Noxus! I heard that they had an *ACTUAL ATMOSPHERE AND REAL AIR," Russell spoke as they walked towards the tourist attraction part of Zaun with various merchants offering ample sorts of items and services. "I know," Cyrus replied, "but I love Zaun! Plus, look at all the things we can do to pass the time!" Cyrus gazed over the scene, glancing at the multitudes of people walking about and the abundant signs and adverts showing what the small shopkeepers had to offer, until one caught his eye. "Artist taking commissions and self portraits. I don't think I've seen that one before, Russell. Let's check it out!" Cyrus quickly sputtered as he made his way towards the sign, Russell following in puzzlement and weariness. As Cyrus approached the stand, he looked at the clipboard listing prices. His heart rose when he saw '50% discount for summoners', and then almost plummeted into an abyss when he saw the prices. 20 gold coins for a simple self portrait!? That's 10g with the discount, but what? Cyrus struggled to keep his face from revealing the disgust he felt from witnessing such a high price for a mere drawing. "Need anything?" The artist's voice suddenly penetrated through Cyrus' thoughts. "Yeah, can we have a simple portrait?" Cyrus handed over 10 gold pieces and his summoner profile card, proving his profession. The artist nodded at Russell. "10g extra for the dog..thing." Preferring to avoid conflict, Cyrus reluctantly handed over another 10 pieces, not being able to hide the disappointment from his face. Russell, offended by being referred to as a 'thing', almost opened his mouth in protest, but quickly shut it in response to meeting contact with Cyrus' eyes, which seemed to say, "Don't you dare." "Stand right over there. I'll have it done in 5 minutes or so." The artist began to flourish his drawing paper with his mighty pen and pencil, furiously doodling and scribbling, attempting to recreate the image of the boy and his pet through his artwork. "It's finished," the author declared as he handed the completed drawing to Cyrus. Cyrus stared at it, feeling a mixture of delight and disappointment. He liked it, but... 20 gold pieces. Probably equal in terms of quality to cost ratio. As they walked away, Russell couldn't help but mutter "That does NOT look like me." much to the amazement of the artist who had no idea where the voice came from. "Ah, it's not THAT bad, Russell. I'll hang it in my room as a souvenir." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Night had grown and the black sea of darkness and stars enveloped the sky as Cyrus returned to his room. "So, your first real day as a summoner. How are ya feeling?". Cyrus sighed as he laid on his bed, exhausted by the training and extensive roaming he had done today. "It was alright. Things are so scarily new to me, though. What if I'm not a good summoner? What if I can't control my magic?" Russell lay on his paws next to the bed Cyrus was rested on. "You'll be fine, man. I mean, you barely just started! They're not gonna expect you to take this all in overnight, you know. You're a tough kid, and I'm sure you'll get used to it." Russell paused for a moment, and then added, "I'm new to all this, too. But I've always been there for you, and I'll always be here to help you when you need it. So don't sweat it so soon." Russell's words calmed down Cyrus' tension. "Thanks, Russell," he breathed. Happy with the encouragement, Cyrus drifted off into sleep, wondering what the future had in store for him....
