Keeper of the Veritama
|
Synar gazed up at the dark purple sky. The Constellations twinkled and sparkled. The night skies were always an object of fascination. So many questions about what was out there, what power was in those stars. The Shinkumo Mountains were nothing but black outlines in the distance. Their peaks glowing as starlight reflected off the snow. It was late spring, but the mountain peaks held their frost long into the summer. The grove of trees Synar was currently sitting under was where he had first sat and gained connections with the earth. They whispered their secrets to him, and he gave them his own. He sat there. Watching the stars, he let his mind wander. Eventually though, he heard a sharp cry. He recognized it as being from a bird, but he didn't know what kind. Synar stood and ran towards the sound. He augmented his eyes and ears so that he could see clearly in the dim starlight. The moon a waning crescent provided little light to the already dim night. Eventually he came what seemed to be a pool of stars on the ground. It made a sharp cry again, and Synar realized that it was an Ionian Starry Hawk. Such creatures rarely came down from their high mountain peak nests. They were nocturnal hunters, colored to fit the night sky above. They were majestic creatures. As the bird cried again, Synar snapped back to reality. The bird was hurt. Kneeling down, Synar inspected the creature. He knew little about anatomy, but he could help heal the creature. Synar let a small green bubble of energy start to form, and touched the bird. It's wing twisted back into a proper location with a small pop, and as the light vanished, the bird sat up and looked at him and turned away, ready to fly away. It turned it's head back, and with it's golden eyes, gazed into Synar's own. It was full of attitude. It seemed to be mocking Synar as if saying, I can fly now, can you? And not much longer after that, the bird took off, did a single circle as if saying "You coming?" and flew off towards the distant mountains. Synar let out a small chuckle, and let magic envolope him. He hadn't done such a transformation in a long long time. His body changed, shifting into a large eagle, usually found in the southern jungles of the Mainland. His eyesight clear, he saw the eagle flying off in the distance. With a few powerful wingbeats, Synar took to the air, and soared after the Starry Eagle. After a few hours, based on the positioning of the moon during the flight, Synar saw the eagle land, and landed after him on a rocky cliffside. Synar's transformation wore off. He shivered, and used a bit more magic to create a warm blanket of heavy leaves around himself to stave off the cold. The eagle stood there in it's nest. "You challenged me to chase you, you cheeky bird." Synar chuckled slightly, "So I did, now here I am." The bird only cawed softly. It seemed to be beckoning Synar closer. Synar sighed, stood up, and stepped forward, and felt a slight smoosh and crunch underneath his foot. He had stepped in the Eagle's excrement. The eagle let out a caw that was clearly a laugh, and Synar realized he'd been tricked, by a bird of all things. "You really are a clever one." Synar said, with a bitter laugh. The eagle fluttered up to Synar's shoulder, and stood there, gazing at Synar with his twinkling golden eyes. Eventually the Eagle began to gaze upwards, and Synar looked up too. A shooting star shot across the sky. The eagle settled down on Synar's shoulder, and seemed to be content. "Well then, it seems you and I are friends now. I guess I'll call you Astranus. Star, the Starry Eagle. I'm a pathetic excuse for a man. But I'm not used to having animal companions. Names are not my strong point." The Eagle let out another laughing caw. "Well then, If you'd like to accompiany on my adventures, you can always come and find me. But if you only ever want to go with me while I'm here in Ionia, that's fine. I'll come and visit from time to time. I can guess you'll be able to find me when you want." With that, Synar moved off to the side, and lay down on a spot that wasn't covered in too much frost, or more bird droppings. Astranus hopped down and fluttered over to his nest, and lay down. Together, the two looked up at the night sky, content in the moment. |
