Undead Cyborg Merman wearing Crab Armor
Note

Dr. Roan Xelak barreled through the underwater city like a shark on the hunt. None could stand in his way as he utilized his magic to brush them aside with monstrously powerful waves.

This was it.

They were alive.

It hadn't been until recently that he was able to even begin searching. That accursed... thing had murdered him, using trickery he had never even conceived of before to evade him while controlling a shark that eventually had ripped him to pieces. It was only through the blessings of both undeath and the Glorious Evolution that he had been able to get here.

The murderer's time would come. But first, he had a promise to keep.

"HALT!"

Dr. Xelak noted the presence of the Tidecaller's personal guard only distantly. No one, not even them, could be allowed to slow him down.

Between the three of them, only the one who had shouted at him was prepared for Dr. Xelak's wave. The other two shouted in surprise as they were brushed aside, hurled down the passageways between structures on either side of the path. The one remaining managed to throw up a defensive barrier in time and remained steadfast directly in Dr. Xelak's path.

The guard snarled and shouted, "To the abyss with you!" as he thrust forward with his spear, aiming to skewer Roan through the chest.

Roan could have easily dodged the spear and continued on his way, but instead he felt a surge of rage. With his brand new mechanical hand, Dr. Xelak grabbed the spear, redirecting it and using its momentum in his favor as he yanked it from his opponent's hands. The guard was stunned.

His mechanical eye whirred as it charged up. Its red glow illuminated the guard's wide eyes beneath his helmet.

"Swim. Away."

The guard didn't need to be told twice. He sped off in the direction that his fellow guards had been hurled in, disappearing from view as he turned a corner.

Dr. Xelak turned to the door they had been guarding. The commotion had caused those within to bar it. A quick scan with his new eye revealed most of them cowering away from the door, but flanking the door were two more guards, poised to strike.

Only one figure remained in the center of the room with no sign of fear. Roan couldn't determine their identity, but he had a feeling he knew who it was.

He hadn't come this far to turn back now. With the ferocity of a riptide, he ripped the door from its hinges. The two guards stepped out into the doorway and launched a counterattack, aiming to pin him to the ground with their waves. Dr. Xelak tried to grin, but then remembered he no longer had a mouth. Despite this distraction, he felt the flow of the two spells, masterfully constructed to complement each other.

The two had clearly practiced this before.

Unfortunate that they believed it was enough.

Dr. Xelak "grabbed" the dual spell with his remaining hand and brought it to his chest, letting it flow through him, which sent him into a spin. In the split second that it took him to revolve once, he thrust his hand out again, unleashing the spell upon the two who had cast it. Their shouts of surprise were cut off abruptly as they were pinned to the floor and silenced, now completely helpless.

Roan burst into the room, looking around frantically before glaring at the only visible occupant.

"Where. Are. They." he growled.

Nami stood her ground and said nothing, grasping her ornate staff in one hand and allowing it to rest on the ground, betraying no hint of nervousness.

This sent Roan into a fury once again. "WHERE ARE MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER?" he screamed as he unleashed a spell.

Nami simply held up her free hand and caught the spell. It hung suspended for a moment before dissipating harmlessly.

With a scream of rage, Roan rushed the Tidecaller, aiming to wrap his hands around her delicate neck and force the information out of her.

The next thing he knew, he was flattened against the floor.

Impossible. Not even she is that fast.

But there was nothing he could do. He strained as hard as he could, trying to get free of the aqua prison, but to no avail. He screamed again.

"You can come out now. I have this handled," Nami murmured.

Presences filled the room. From his position, Roan was able to recognize some of them. Greel, his coworker. Unlar, his neighbor. Alfin, his brother in law.

"Alfin!" he gritted out as he struggled, "Where are Allhi and Brooke? Are they safe? Are they here?"

Alfin said nothing, his green skin rippling visibly with discomfort. Murmuring broke out among the room's other occupants. Roan guessed that there were close to twenty Marai present.

Roan was unable to make out what they were saying. Not that he particularly cared at the moment.

"ALFIN!" he shouted. The entire room seemed to flinch.

Alfin himself was spurred into action. Snatching a spear from a downed guard, he jabbed at Roan's neck. The spear hit the armor that connected to his faceplate with a clang.

"Do not speak their names, abomination," he growled, "Or mine. You tarnish my brother in law's memory with your very existence."

Roan felt a resurgence of his rage. "You clam head! Open and see what is in front of you, brother! I have returned-"

"SILENCE."

Alfin jabbed him again, this time hitting the flesh of his back. To his horror, Roan could hear agreement going around the room, and no one moved to help him.

His mind raced. How could he defend himself? How could he show them that he was who he said he was?

It was only then that he noticed the room itself. Lining the walls were pictures. Pictures of him.

His heart sank as he continued looking around. Relics of mourning were present. Testaments to his accomplishments.

He had arrived at his own funeral.

A scream sounded from somewhere to his left.

He turned his head in that direction frantically. "BROOKE!" he shouted.

The aqua prison distorted his vision somewhat at this distance, but there was no mistaking his daughter's brown form. Had she grown since he last saw her?

Before he could say anything else, a familiar green form wrestled Brooke away as she continued to scream something that Roan couldn't make out in all the commotion.

"ALLHI!"

Roan's wife turned to look at him. He strained, his mechanical eye struggling to pierce the prison and failing. With renewed strength, Dr. Xelak burst from the prison, knocking Alfin back, and looked. His organic eye betrayed his desperation.

"Allhi! I made it! I've come back for you! We can leave this place, find what we discussed-"

The look of horror on his wife's face killed his statement dead in the water.

"Monster," she breathed.

"Allhi, plea-"

"MONSTER!"

With a scream, Allhi unleashed a spell on him, flattening him on the ground yet again. He had taught her that spell.

He couldn't move. Couldn't speak. The room filled with cries echoing hers.

Monster.

Monster.

Monster.

He sank into despair. This was what it was to be a monster.

This was what that necromancer had warned him of.

Monster.

Monster.

Monster.

The shouting continued for an eternity, it felt like. The next time Roan was aware of his surroundings, he was being escorted away in restraints. He kept his head down and allowed the guards to lead him.

"You cannot return here."

Roan acknowledged Nami's statement with a grunt.

"For the record, you are no longer a resident. However, I am going to keep you under Marai law. None should have to experience what you have today," she continued.

"I don't want your charity," Roan growled.

"You have no choice in the matter. I recommend finding a place to stay in Bilgewater. I can set you up there, if you like."

"I don't want your charity," Roan repeated.

"Very well." Nami gestured to the guards. Hesitantly, they released the restraints holding Dr. Xelak.

"Stay in touch," she said as she and the guards left him on the city's outskirts.

He intended to.

He began swimming upwards. This would continue.

As he headed for the Institute of War, he shook his head, struggling to get the word out.

Monster.
