Keeper of the Veritama
preface

Synar stood from his chair. His back humped over with severe age. His skin gnarled and rough. Those young summoners who saw him often stated he looked like an ancient oak tree. Synar thought the comparison was apt considering he was now two thousand four hundred twenty-six years old. He had been the High Summoner for the Institute of War for two thousand three hundred fifty-two of those years.

He slowly walked out of his office, and towards the court chamber. Though full out combat from any Faction was rare, disputes over magical events that occurred on Runeterra were still fairly regular. The Dispute at the moment was actually over the last remaining Phyrikos in Shurima. Zaun, Noxus, Piltover, Demacia, and Bandle City had surrendered their claims on the desert back to Shurima, and Azir had finally reunited the Shuriman people. The people who were actually in this dispute were people few would have expected to lay claim to the last remnants of Phyrikos. Mt. Targon, Shurima, Nyroth, and Kumungu were the four who asked for legal intervention.

Icathia stayed out of the fight, and Synar didn't care. The void seemed to know that as long as the World was United, they would never truly be capable of ending it like they wanted. So they slowly and carefully negotiated with Shurima for more area to spread out, and actually kept its promises to have Rek'Sai and her brood leave most of the Shuriman territories.

Synar hobbled along the halls. Few knew just how old he was. Only the "gods" who were older than he was knew just how old he was. Synar had watched champions grow and be born, nations rise and fall, and rise again. He had seen Targon, Nyroth and Kumungu gain representatives of the League. The world was different. He realized that High summoner Kolminye would probably be proud of what had happened in the two dozen centuries since her death.

Synar finally entered the Dispute Room. As he did so, the loud chatter ceased immediately. He let a small grin appear on his face. Few people dared test Synar's patience. There were rumors that Synar was actually a demon or a spirit. His voice was weak and his body frail. He sat and tapped the ground with his staff. It stood in place and it began to grow. It became a small treant that stood at his side to act as his voice to the assembly.

"The Final assmebly of the Phyrikos Dispute is called to order. High Summoner Synar Celimdha presides." The treant spoke with a deep booming voice that echoed across the chamber.

A summoner from the Kumungu assembly stood and before he got a chance to open his mouth, the treant spoke again "High Summoner Celimdha refuses to acknowledge the words from Summoner Thenre, also known as the The Mouth of Endless Lies." The summoner sat looking incredibly embarrassed.

As the procedings wore on, things were fairly civil, and Synar had to do little mediation between the 4 sides. Such Cooperation had been unheard of during his first years as a summoner as many factions fought all out to show that they were relevant and deserved such recognition alongside the likes of Noxus, Zaun, Demacia, and Bilgewater.

At the end of the procedings, the Treant spoke again. "The Proceedings have finished, unresolved issues will be decided on the fields of justice, so is declared." Applause filled the chamber. Compromise was more commonplace, but in those cases when both sides were unyielding, combat was still used. Very few of the champions Synar knew still acted as champions. Most had died, but the Yordles, mysterious beings, had passed on their mantles to new Champions, trained under the careful eyes of the former Champions.

Synar returned to his office. There he saw two figures that he wondered when he would see.

"Hello Kindred, Is it time?"

"Nearly," Said Lamb. "For me to Tear your throat out!" growled Wolf. "Calm Wolf, let him explain himself." replied Lamb.

"So, not only is it nearly time for me to pass from this world, but you wish to know why I avoided you for so long?"

"Yes," replied lamb simply.

"It was never my intention to cheat death. I hope you understand that. I met Ivern, though I didn't know it was him at the time. In Soraka's Grove, Ivern sat with the trees, listening to their stories. As I sat and studied underneath the trees, Ivern spoke with me. Asked me what my task was, and I told him that it was to stop Rune Magic. Alas, I have failed in eliminating Rune magic. Despite my studies continuing for centuries, I never completed my task, and now I shall not finish it."

"So you did not seek out extended life out of fear of death?" Lamb replied. "It matters not, he shall be mine." replied Wolf simply.

"I shall gladly walk into your arrow, or your jaws Wolf, if that is my destiny, but first, I wish to find someone who might be able to carry on my work."

"Very well, you shall have your time, but next we come, we will take you." Kindred replied together.

The vanished, and Synar sat down and let out a sigh. He stood up again and went out in search of the person he had been watching for many years.

Synar approached a young woman, about 24 years of age. "Sarina? Sarina Farfield?" He asked her, "I'd like to speak with you."

"Oh? Of course," She replied, and began to follow Synar as he walked away.

They finally arrived at Synar's Study.

"Sarina, as you know, I am Synar Celimdha. What you may not know, is that I am a very distant relative. I was the older brother of your 14 times great grandparents. I have watched my siblings' families spread far and wide across runeterra. All the while doing my own job here at the Institute of War. I have lived a great deal long time, but my time is coming to an end, and my studies are not complete. I have actually been following you since birth, along side your many thousands of cousins, but when you came to the Institute of War, the only other member of the Ancient Celimdha family to do so since myself, I knew that you were person I needed. I'd like to give you my research and ask you to try and complete it. If you return to your families ancestral home in Ionia, and go to the legendary grove where Soraka once resided, You may find the help you need. However, I wish to bequeath to you my journals." He led her to the bookshelf, and pulled down 10 dusty books all engraved with a single strange looking sign.

"This is known as a Veritama. This particular glyph is known as the "Lock" glyph, and can only be opened by a "Key" glyph. What I'm giving you are hundreds upon hundreds of veritama that I've developed. I wnated to make it extensive enough that it could one day replace runic magic across the world. However, I never felt like it was complete. I'd like you to study these, and do what you can to finish it."

Sarina looked dumbstruck, "But why me? Isn't there anyone else?"

Synar looked a little sad. "I chose you because you're my family. And the only one to truly embrace the path of magic as a calling. It is because of that, that I trust you so much. You are filled with such hope for the world, and i see a great deal of myself in you."

Sarina looked incredibly scared. She accepted the journals, and carried them back to her room.

Synar sighed, and realized he was so exceptionally tired.

He sat down, and said out loud "Kindred, I'm ready."

He saw out of the corner of his eye the shadowy shape of the Kindred appear. He felt a sharp pain in his chest, and knew, he had been blessed with Lambs golden arrow. He let out one final breath, and watched the world vanish. Death would be a grand adventure.

Synar's body was found 2 days later after he failed to appear at a Dispute meeting. The ceremonies were broadcast across the world, and collectively the World mourned the loss of the man who had lead the world through both war and peace, and helped shape the world into the Unified body it was.

5 years after Synar's death, a tree had begun to sprout over his grave. Those who were practitioners of Nature magic said that they heard a voice when they walked by it, and Children stated that the tree always seemed to rustle in response to jokes and games that were being played in the shade of it's leaves.

The Tree was Named Synar's Oak, and was considered a Sacred place in the Institute of War.

I think this is portraying how Synar will probably die in the very distant future, as it says in his story that he's been High summoner for about 2 dozen centuries, which is about 1,200 years, when he isn't even High summoner now. I'm gonna go on a limb here and say that this story is VERY much in the future. Sorry Beta, he's not the first faction summoner to cannonically die...yet.

Hey, I'll jump in front of a bullet to earn that title. Maybe... If someone paid me...

Anyways, it's a really nice story. It's a good closing for Synar. Nice and peaceful for the likes of mortality. I'd make Beta do the same thing if I actually knew how he should die.

That "Icathia slowly receding" thing, however... That will not happen. Not on my watch positioned conveniently on my tentacle-arm.

Seems to me like Runeterra has changed preposterously little. In 2016 years, our world has changed so absurdly drastically that the political, cultural, and technological landscapes are unrecognizable.

Sure, some things never change, but Damn.

Well, when Hextech/Magic exists, How much would change? I mean, in 2k years, Phyrikos is nearly depleted, We have 3 new factions that have representation. Nyroth has been fully healed as Pterinthians have figured out how to fully repair themselves and have begun to spread across the surface of Nyroth. The Freljord is Unified, Noxus and Demacia are much more "tame" and a much larger sense of Global Cooperation has been achieved by the League of legends. The last major "War" was fought about 700 years before this takes place. Bilgewater has stopped the slaughtering of Sea Serpents and Piracy has ended.

WHile I didn't dive purely into the political landscape of the world in nearly 2500 years into the future, if anyone were to travel to that future, they'd be like, "What the fuck happened?"

That's optimistically utopian ;)

But the story itself is pretty interesting.

I enjoyed the read. It did make me curious, though, about who else would be around. I want to say Red would be, but considering how often things go horribly wrong for him, his time is bound to end early on in this time jump.

Quite a bit would change, actually, regardless of the existence of Hextech/Magic. Piltover and Zaun's existences prove that the idea of progress is important, at least in some places in the world. And even if Hextech is an awesome piece of tech, there's always room for improvement. Mass production, increased energy efficiency, reduced cost, artificial hextech crystal replication, etc. In 40 years, computers have gone from giant, clunky miracles of technology to miracles of technology that can fit in a pair of jeans. I'd expect Hextech to at least make those kinds of strides in two thousand years.

As for magic, just because its inherent doesn't necessarily make it unchanging. After all, we have the entire field of physics here in the real world dedicated to understanding the fundamental rules of the universe, and our growing understanding has allowed our society to make huge advances. A growing understanding of the nature of magic could allow Runeterran societies to make similar strides. Not to mention magical innovation, combining different forms of magic, inventing new ones, exploring different nuances of each magical field. Who knows? Maybe artificially induced magical ability, given that Riot has stated that magic is tied to matter (I never liked the "magical ability is something you're born with" trope, but oh well). The Institute could figure that out and start figuring out ways to manipulate that magical framework.

So a lot would change, really.

Sasha might 'survive' to this point...but it would only because she failed her 'quest' horribly and probably would not have been helping towards this peaceful picture.
